MG Motor has confirmed the name of its next electric car in India. To be called MG Comet EV, the car will be a compact, two-door electric vehicle that is based on sister brand Wuling’s Air EV. It is expected to go on sale in India around the middle of this year and may be priced around the Rs 10 lakh mark as an entry-level EV by the company.
Just like Hector and Gloster, the name Comet continues MG’s tradition to name its vehicles after the British airplanes that were used in World War II. What differs this time is the form factor. Unlike MG’s common SUV format, the Comet EV will be a compact electric car meant for the urban commute. For this, it spans a mere 2.9 meters in length and has a seating capacity of four people in total. Once on sale, the MG Comet EV is likely to be the smallest electric car among all the EV offerings of automobile bigwigs in India.
As for the features and specifications, the MG Comet EV is much similar to its version that currently retails in Indonesia. The compact electric car comes in a two-colour, box-shaped design with a stout front and a tall form factor. There is an LED light at the front that wraps across the face of the car, ending at its side-view mirrors. Its small wheels are set 2,010mm apart, giving it a substantial wheelbase for a car of its length.
MG is expected to launch the Comet EV with the latest technology onboard later this year. The company has not made anything official as yet, but from what we know as of now, the Compact EV will likely be powered by a 20-25kWh battery and a 50kW electric motor. This combination might just be good enough for a range of 300 km on a single charge. Other new-age features are likely to include dual-screen infotainment, connected car tech, voice command support, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
As mentioned, MG Comet EV will enter the electric hatchback segment in India later this year at an expected ex-showroom price of Rs 10 lakh and above. Once it does, the EV shall compete with the likes of the Tata Tigor EV and the recently launched Citroen eC3. We shall wait and see how it fairs in the segment upon its debut.
