Honda has introduced a new electric car by the name of e:Ny1, which comes as the second purely battery-powered vehicle by the Japanese automaker. The e:Ny1 is an all-electric B-segment SUV and is built on Honda’s new e:N Architecture F – a platform with an electric motor at the front and a focus on a highly rigid body, a low centre of gravity, and optimum under-floor aerodynamics. The highlight of the electric SUV, however, turns out to be its performance figures – a WLTP range of 412 km and DC fast-charging support that juices it up from 10 to 80 per cent in just 45 minutes.
The new Honda EV was unveiled recently at the company’s European Media Event in Offenbach, Germany and follows its Honda e city car that retails in the region. At the launch, Tom Gardner, Senior Vice President at Honda Motor Europe Ltd. said, “The e:Ny1 is the logical next step on our electrification journey in Europe. Our development philosophy blends intelligent, customer-centric technology with beautiful design and fun-to-drive dynamics. This latest SUV exemplifies Honda’s commitment to electrification and is the latest step on Honda’s electrification journey.”
The words are meant for a battery-driven short SUV with a sophisticated exterior aesthetic that includes a short front overhang, large wheels and a wide track. Interestingly, the e:Ny1 also debuts an all-new electric identity for Honda, with white ‘H’ badges featuring around the vehicle, including the nose badge, wheel centre caps and steering wheel. In addition, a new typeface spells out ‘Honda’ on the tailgate for a premium look that will feature on the brand’s future EVs.
Honda claims to offer ample interior space and comfort features on the e:Ny1. A look at these reveals an all-new centre console, multiple storage options, and wireless charging. The dashboard is topped by a large 15.1-inch touchscreen which includes a comprehensive suite of infotainment and driving options.
Honda also used an all-new chassis on the e:Ny1, which it has developed specifically for battery electric vehicles, especially to ensure improved torsional rigidity. A key component used for this is high-tensile steel, which constitutes about 47 per cent of the e:Ny1’s body (by weight) and promises big on safety.

As for its capabilities on the road, the new electric SUV by Honda comes with a three-in-one integrated power drive unit, electric motor and gearbox. This generates a maximum output of 150 kW, 310 Nm of torque and is engineered for smooth acceleration and deceleration. Under the floor sits a lithium-ion battery that delivers up to 412 km (WLTP) of range and DC fast-charging capability that can go from 10 to 80 per cent in 45 minutes.
Honda is yet to reveal if the new e:Ny1 will make its way to India. If it does, it is sure to be a strong competitor in the electric mid-SUV segment in the country.
