Maruti Suzuki has secured a patent for the design of its upcoming electric vehicle, the eWX, in India. The automaker unveiled the electric hatchback as a concept vehicle at the Tokyo Motor Show 2023.
Maruti Suzuki will introduce the eWX concept as a budget-friendly EV tailored for city driving. Moreover, the production model boasts a range of 230km on a single charge.
It’s worth noting that obtaining a design patent doesn’t guarantee the vehicle’s eventual release. Sometimes, it’s merely to preserve the vehicle’s design elements. As Suzuki’s eWX moves towards production, it will be rebranded under a different name, the specifics of which are currently unknown.
A Compact Design
The eWX concept complies with Japan’s Kei car regulations, having a compact length of just 3,400mm. Its design adopts a boxy and tallboy shape, drawing inspiration from the Wagon R.
Notably, the eWX concept is even more compact than the S-Presso available in India. The patented design remains in its conceptual stage, lacking headlights and featuring a curved windshield that extends beyond the A-pillars.
Expected Features and Launch
Despite Suzuki’s silence on the specifics of the eWX, the car may feature a standard single-motor setup. Earlier, the company stated that this model could offer a range of 230km on a single charge.
Recent reports indicate that Maruti will introduce a hatchback based on the eWX model into its lineup between 2026 and 2027. Built on the extensively localized K-EV platform, this hatchback will likely rival the Tiago EV and MG Comet EV.
Maruti’s first EV offering for India: The eVX SUV
Suzuki is on the verge of creating its first electric vehicle (EV) for India, namely the eVX mid-size electric SUV.
The production kick-off for this SUV has been delayed from September 2024 to February 2025.
Maruti Suzuki’s eVX SUV will go head-to-head with Hyundai’s upcoming Creta EV, marking a significant stride for Suzuki’s entry into India’s electric vehicle market.
The entry of Maruti Suzuki into the electric vehicle segment shows the brand is serious about sustainable mobility. Additionally, it fits well with the preferences of consumers who are now looking for eco-friendly mobility solutions.
