Mercedes-Benz India is now taking pre-orders for the upcoming all-electric G-Class. The electric variant of the iconic G-Class, known as the G Wagon, will likely debut next year with the latest EQ Technology.
The Mercedes-Benz G 580 is the first electric model in the EV lineup that doesn’t follow Mercedes’ usual EQ naming system. Future electric vehicles from the brand will also move away from this naming convention.
Despite being electric, the G-Class maintains its iconic boxy appearance and dimensions. However, there will be minor design alterations to distinguish it from its traditional counterpart. Similarly, its interior remains mostly unchanged in design and layout.
Details of the Mercedes-Benz G 580
Mercedes-Benz launched the all-electric G-Wagon in the international market a few months ago. Presently, it is available exclusively in a single model known as the G580 featuring EQ Technology.
However, the most significant change lies beneath the surface, where the conventional internal combustion engine has been substituted with a quad-motor all-wheel-drive electric drivetrain.
Equipped with four electric motors—one for each wheel—the vehicle generates 579 horsepower and 1,165 Nm of torque. Also, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, the EV SUV comes with a 116.5 kWh battery pack. This provides an estimated driving range of 473 km. Moreover, charging from 10% to 80% takes just 32 minutes.
Certainly, the standout feature of any G-Wagon remains its off-road prowess. And the G 580 with EQ Technology maintains this capability without compromise. It receives enhanced reinforcements underneath to safeguard the battery pack, while its four motors can simulate a differential lock for improved performance. Additionally, it can perform 360-degree spins akin to a tank, showcasing another unique feature.
Wrapping Up
As of now, Mercedes-Benz has not released any official information regarding the India launch date. But you can expect the launch around late 2024 or early 2025.
Internationally, the electric G-Wagon starts at $168,000 (approximately Rs 1.4 crore), but due to customs duties on completely built units (CBUs), its price in India could exceed Rs 3 crore.
