MG Comet EV at Rs 8 Lakh is now India’s most Affordable Electric Car

The second electric car by MG Motor India is a compact 2-door EV that promises to be useful for city commuters.

There is a new electric car in India that promises the experience of an EV without being too heavy on your pocket. With the launch of the MG Comet EV at an ex-showroom introductory price of Rs 7.98 lakh, MG’s latest electric car now bags the title of being the most affordable electric car in India. The full pricing of the EV is yet to be revealed but the introductory price is enough to hint at the Comet EV’s purpose – to provide a pollution-free ride at an entry-level price in the country.

For this, the EV rightly takes a very compact shape, with only 2 doors and a length of just under 3 meters. It is 1.5 meters wide and seats up to 4 passengers with split seats. Interestingly, MG Motor claims that the Comet EV has a turning radius of just 4.2 meters, which should make it an ideal fit for urban driving. Just as its design, Comet EV’s performance figures are aligned to its purpose. The electric car is equipped with a 17.3 kWh Li-ion battery that promises a range of up to 230km on a single charge, just about enough to make a to-and-fro run between even the farthest corners of any city.

The Comet EV is the second electric car from MG Motor India, after its famous MG ZS EV, which entered the Indian EV market as an early runner. MG’s experience with EVs shows already, with a host of features on the Comet EV despite its pocket-friendly tag. Here is a look at these in detail.

MG Comet EV Features

MG Comet EV interiors

The MG Comet EV clearly has a distinct design when it comes to compact cars in India. Adding to that are several elements, like split headlights, LED lights across its width, alloy wheels, and a dual-tone finish.

Inside, the Comet EV comes with synthetic leather seats, a leather-covered steering wheel, and a 10.25-inch floating infotainment display. Some nifty add-ons include support for voice commands, steering-mounted audio controls, wireless Android Auto as well as Apple Carplay. From what can be observed, the Comet EV does not compromise on space either, with a claimed “extra leg room in the front and rear.”

Despite the long list of features, the Comet EV is not an ideal choice for all buyers alike. The EV is specifically meant for those traveling within a city on a daily basis, and cannot cater much to those wanting an EV for outstation drives. Its performance figures make it clear. Here is a look at those.

MG Comet EV Performance

As mentioned, the Comet EV comes with a 17.3 kWh Li-Ion battery pack, which in turn powers an electric motor that produces a maximum power of 42 PS and a peak torque of 110 Nm. The range of the car is limited to 230 km, after which it takes about 7 hours to charge fully. This, through a 3.3 kW charger that comes with the car. Note that MG Comet EV has no fast charging support.

The Comet EV is available in a total of five colours, with a host of customisation options also available to buyers. We are yet to have more information on the pricing and trims of Comet EV and we shall share it here as soon as MG Motor India is out with it.

Bookings for the MG Comet EV will commence on May 15, 2023, so we can expect more updates on the EV in the weeks to follow.
