In January 2023, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 made its debut in the Indian market as a locally manufactured unit. However, as per media reports, the company has now issued a voluntary recall for 1,744 Ioniq 5 electric SUVs because of a suspected problem with the integrated charging control unit (ICCU). All units produced between the launch date and April 2024 are subject to this recall.
So, What is ICCU?
The Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) is a critical part that regulates the charging process. It integrates several charging-related tasks, including converting AC to DC power for the battery and ensuring effective, secure charging cycles. In order to prevent overcharging and overheating, it also monitors battery status and connects with charging stations.
Additionally, the ICCU makes it easier to power other devices that are connected to the vehicle with V2L (vehicle-to-load) capabilities. The 12V battery, which powers an EV’s electrical components like the infotainment screen, speakers, climate control, etc., may drain due to an issue with the ICCU unit.
If you own a Hyundai Ioniq 5, you can get the part inspected by bringing the vehicle to the closest Hyundai-authorized workshop. The automaker will get in touch with the owners of the impacted cars to schedule inspections. If they discover a defective part, you will not incur any costs for its replacement.
