After 38 years, the famous Ford Capri nameplate has unexpectedly returned. However, it is no longer the classic sporty coupe. Ford has redesigned the Capri as a modern electric crossover SUV based on Volkswagen’s MEB platform.
Ford previously used the Mustang name for its electric crossover, and now the Ford Capri, once a sleek 2-door coupe, is getting the same treatment.
The new Capri has a unique profile with a roofline similar to a fastback and a strong presence. Its dimensions of 4.63m in length, 1.87m in width, and 1.62m in height, along with a wheelbase of 2.76m, contribute to a spacious interior.
Design
The design of the Capri looks similar to the upcoming Citroen Basalt. The front features a flat fascia with elegantly designed headlights connected by a black panel with the Blue Oval emblem. The hood line smoothly integrates with the car’s shoulder line, bending at the C-pillars and merging with the roofline.
The blacked-out pillars emphasize this effect. Moreover, the wheels boast a stylish appearance. Ford offers 19-inch options, but buyers can choose wheels as large as 21 inches.
Performance
The Capri offers a choice between a single rear motor generating 282 horsepower or a dual-motor configuration producing 335 horsepower.
With the first option, acceleration from 0 to 100 kmph takes 6.4 seconds. Meanwhile, the second option achieves the same in 5.3 seconds. Furthermore, there are two battery capacity options – 77-kWh (628km range) and 79-kWh (592km range).
The 77kWh battery pack takes about 28 minutes to charge from 10-80% with a 135-kW DC charger. On the other hand, the 79-kWh battery pack charges from 10-80% in 26 minutes with a 185-kW charger.
Interior and Features
The interior of the Capri reflects Volkswagen’s influence, highlighted by a 5-inch digital instrument cluster. However, Ford has adapted the cabin design from the Explorer.
A 14.6-inch center touchscreen will come as standard and with adjustable positioning to change the viewing angle. Additionally, the display supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Also, it features:
- Dual-zone climate controls
- Heated front seats and steering wheel
- A power-adjustable driver’s seat with massage function
- Panoramic sunroof
- 12-speaker Band & Olufsen sound system
The vehicle features a 360-degree camera and ADAS tech. Adding to its practicality, the Capri features a generous storage bin and a spacious 627-liter boot.
Although not yet launched in India, the Ford Capri EV price starts from EUR 51,950 (around Rs 47 lakh), making it a high-end product.
