Tata Curvv EV – that is the name of the latest electric car grabbing headlines online and front pages on the newspapers in India. From the trusted house of Tata Motors, the EV comes in the majestic shape of a Coupé SUV. So right off the bat, Tata got one thing right with it – the trending design most buyers are opting for lately. Add to that, Tata Motor’s market lead in the electric car segment, and you may have a mighty impressive machine on your hands. Why the uncertainty? Well, it is yet to receive a market response, with its bookings going live today, August 12. The unofficial word as of now is – Tata Curvv EV will be the game changer in its segment.
Hints for this claim are visible across the vehicle. To begin with, Tata Motors says that the electric SUV Coupé promises “distinctive design, luxurious comfort, robust performance, and top-tier safety features.” Now that is a pretty well-rounded approach to building a great car. Some performance figures accentuate this – a range of 585 km, 0-100 kmph in less than 9 seconds, and a charging system that pumps up 80% of the battery in just 40 minutes. Impressive! But that’s not all.
Highlights
What I personally found the most interesting bit about the new Curvv is the wide gamut of features it boasts. And these are across the spectrum – Luxury, Entertainment, Safety, and even Drive Assistance. Until we have a first-hand experience of its strengths and weaknesses, on paper, the electric Curvv has enough ink to impress the biggest critics.
This article shall explore the vehicle in detail – from its looks, to the promised performance metrics, and all the added features. But before we dive deep into all that the Curvv EV has to offer, let us get the obvious questions out of the way first.
Price and Variants
The price of the Curvv EV starts at Rs 17.49 lakh. This is for the base trim and variant. In total, there are two variants – Curvv.ev 45 and Curvv.ev 55, with the numbers representing their battery capacity. These variants are available in a total of 5 trims, namely Creative, Accomplished, Accomplished +S, Empowered. and Empowered +A. The Curvv.ev 45 is available only in the first 3 trims. While the Curvv.ev 55 is available in all of them except the ‘Creative’ trim.
Prices of each trim are as follows –
Booking and Deliveries
Tata Motors has officially begun with the bookings of the Curvv EV. You can book the car either online through the official website or through your nearest Tata dealership. The booking amount is set at Rs 21,000. Deliveries of the car will start from August 23.
Here, let us have a look at what the car has to offer.
Architecture
This is where things begin to get interesting. The electric Curvv is built on Tata’s all-new acti.ev pure EV architecture. The platform has 4 segments – with the bottom layer comprising the powertrain and layer 2 being the chassis of the vehicle. These are superseded with 2 more layers for electricals and cloud architecture respectively.
Now each of these layers enables unique features for the vehicle, which we shall discover one by one throughout the article.
Performance Specs
As mentioned, the electric Curvv is available in 2 variants of IP67 rated, liquid-cooled battery packs. These power an all-new gen-2 motor and smart power electronics. Here are the performance numbers associated with each of the two variants.
Charging & Features
There are a total of 3 charging solutions that the Curvv EV supports –
- A 7.2 kW AC Home Wall Box Charger for home charging. Provides 10%-100% in 7.9 hours for Curvv.ev 55 and in 6.5 hours for Curvv.ev 45.
- A 15A Portable Charger for charging from any 15A socket. Promises 10%-100% in 21 hours for Curvv.ev 55 and 17.5 hours for Curvv.ev 45.
- DC Fast Charger Support (70kW for Curvv.ev 55 and 60kW for Curvv.ev 45). Charges the battery from 10% to 80% in 40 minutes.
The new electric Curvv also sports a couple of very interesting charging features, namely – Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) Charging and Vehicle to Load (V2L) Technology. While the first is able to charge other compatible vehicles from your Curvv EV, the latter treats it as a mobile power hub for charging drones, electric scooters or other such electronic devices.
Exterior Design and Colour Options
Looks matter, and Tata Motors has given more than enough attention to this phrase with the Curvv EV. The electric car takes the form of an SUV Coupé, with the signature Tata elements. These include the LED DRLs with sequential indicators and a connecting strip in the middle, bi-LED Projectors, front smart charging lid, flush door handles, and a show grille at the front bottom. Connected smart digital lights (LED tail lamps) and a Shark Fin antenna adorn the rear of the sloping roof design. The car runs on R18 alloy wheels with Aero Inserts.
The body cladding in Piano Black finish is an absolute treat to look at. This is standard across the five colour options – Virtual Sunrise, Flame Red, Pure Grey, Empowered Oxide, and Pristine White.
Interior Design & Features
The Curvv EV is pure luxury from the insides, largely thanks to leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof and ambient lighting. For passengers, it comes with AC vents and recliner seats on the rear. The driver gets a 6-way adjustable seat. The dashboard includes 4-spoke illuminated displays, including a 10.25-inch HD odometer screen and a 12.5-inch HD Infotainment screen.
For features, there are paddle shifters, Phygital controls, wireless charger, Apple Car Play and Android Auto support, and a JBL cinematic sound system.
Advanced Features
Now this is a super long list for any car to boast. So much so, that we will come up with a dedicated article to list all the features of the Curvv electric. As highlights, the electric car promises a 500L boot space and 11.6L space in the frunk. It comes with a powered tailgate with gesture activation, JBL cinematic sound system, auto-dimming IRVM, iRA.ev & smartwatch connectivity, voice-assisted panoramic sunroof with mood lighting, 12.3-inch cinematic touchscreen by HARMAN, and a whole lot more features across the vehicle.
