We See Many MG Windsor EVs on the Roads These Days—Here’s Why

On the 15-minute drive from my home to the office, I saw five to six electric cars by MG Motor. With the frequency with which I’m coming across this particular model these days, I’m sure you must have spotted it around you too. I’m referring to the MG Windsor EV, the latest electric car from MG Motor India that has tipped the EV industry scale in favour of its maker. Whether it’s parked outside offices, zipping through city streets, or lined up at charging stations, it’s hard to miss. Its industry-leading sales numbers confirm this “omnipresence.”

When you see such success with any entity, the inevitable question arises – what makes it a hit? In this case, why is the Windsor EV, with its offbeat design and make, enjoying this sudden rise in popularity? I did some digging, and this is the closest I could get to having an answer, without driving the car myself (Full disclosure!).

MG Windsor EV Design: Optimised for Efficiency

As I mentioned, the Windsor EV is not your regular build of cars. One look at it and you can figure that it features, what the company calls “an AeroGlide Design.” As per MG, it is engineered to improve aerodynamics and enhance driving efficiency. The sculpted body reduces air resistance, leading to better range and smoother performance. This design choice contributes to energy efficiency, reducing the overall drag while maintaining stability at higher speeds. The active grille shutters and air curtains in the front bumper help manage airflow efficiently, reducing turbulence around the wheels. The roofline subtly slopes to enhance the aerodynamic profile without compromising cabin space. These improvements result in lower energy consumption, helping drivers get more out of each charge.

Comfort and Interior Features

The features list on its web page highlights that the Windsor EV provides a practical and comfortable driving experience. The Infinity View Glass Roof allows more natural light into the cabin, creating a spacious feel. This panoramic sunroof uses UV-filtering glass, which reduces heat buildup inside the vehicle, ensuring passenger comfort in warmer climates.

The Aero-Lounge Seats with 135° recline offer additional comfort, particularly for long journeys. These ergonomic seats provide lumbar support, reducing fatigue on extended trips. The seat upholstery uses a combination of synthetic leather and breathable fabric, for both durability and ventilation. The rear seats have a split-folding function, providing additional cargo space when needed. The dual-zone climate control provides separate temperature settings for both front and rear passengers, prioritising individual preferences.

Technology and Connectivity

The Windsor EV comes with smart technology features for convenience and connectivity. The MG App Store powered by Jio provides access to entertainment, navigation, and vehicle management apps, allowing users to integrate their digital ecosystem seamlessly into their driving experience. The infotainment system features a 10.1-inch touchscreen with a responsive interface, supporting both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for hands-free connectivity.

The Drive Mate Pro+ system integrates safety features and real-time vehicle diagnostics, assisting drivers with road awareness and vehicle performance insights. This system includes features like adaptive cruise control, which automatically adjusts speed based on traffic conditions, and lane departure warning, which alerts the driver when veering out of the lane without signalling. A 360-degree camera system provides a full view of the vehicle, making parking and manoeuvring in tight spaces easier. Additionally, over-the-air (OTA) updates ensure that the vehicle’s software remains up to date with the latest features and security enhancements.

Safety and Protection

The Windsor EV includes multiple safety measures to protect occupants. It comes with 6 airbags covering the front, side, and curtain areas, providing comprehensive protection in case of a collision. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) ensures stability during sudden manoeuvres or slippery conditions by adjusting braking force and engine power distribution.

The Electric Parking Brake (EPB) with auto-hold functionality eliminates the need for a traditional handbrake, adding convenience and preventing rollback on inclines. Bumper corner protectors and door edge guards help protect the vehicle from minor scrapes and dents in tight parking spaces.

The Windsor EV also comes with a hill-start assist, preventing the vehicle from rolling backwards when starting on an incline, and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), which alerts the driver of any underinflated tyres to ensure optimal performance and safety.
