On Wednesday, the EV sector in India saw a noteworthy move as Jio-bp, the fuel retail joint venture of Reliance Industries and bp, announced a partnership with Mumbai-based real-estate developer – House of Hiranandani.
The partnership aims to establish Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure at House of Hiranandani properties across Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru.
Operating under the brand Jio-bp Pulse in the Electric Mobility sector, Jio-bp has established one of India’s largest and most rapidly expanding EV charging networks.
Additionally, the company operates over two dozen of the country’s biggest charging hubs, each averaging over 150 charge points. Jio-bp also aims to construct fast charging stations at various EV user-friendly locations, including malls, restaurants, hotels, workplaces, residential societies, and public parking areas.
Through this partnership, Jio-bp Pulse aims to extend its network to the esteemed properties of the House of Hiranandani, with an initial focus on prime locations like Hiranandani Estate and Hiranandani Meadows in Thane.
Apart from the EV charging stations, Jio-bp, which currently operates 1700 fuel retail outlets, plans to grow this number by 250, reaching a total of 1950 outlets by the end of 2024.
Adoption of EVs in India
India ranks as the world’s third-largest automotive market, with the government actively promoting the adoption of electric vehicles through various initiatives.
The government initiative is making a positive impact, as in 2023, India witnessed a remarkable 48% year-on-year growth in EV sales, registering a total of 1,526,319 electric vehicles compared to 1,025,116 in 2022.
However, setting up EV charging stations is crucial to boost the growth of EVs further. This was noticeable as well, as the number of EV charging stations in India was 9,388 across 807 cities in 2022. As of February 2, 2024, the count has reached 12,146.
