Mercedes-Benz on Tuesday finally revealed the highly anticipated electric version of the G-Class. Interestingly, the company has renamed the all-electric SUV “EQG” to “G580 with EQ technology.”
Mercedes said the sales will begin in the second half, with the exclusive Edition One version, loaded with numerous features, available first. In addition, after its debut in Beijing, the model will later make entry in India.
Moreover, the new G580 retains the iconic boxy design of the ICE-powered G-Class.
Performance and Battery
With a modified gas G-Class platform, the e-SUV features four motors, delivering a total output of 579 hp.
Furthermore, equipped with 579 hp and 879 lb-ft of torque, the EV can reach 100 kmph in just 4.6 seconds. The interesting thing about the electric G-Class is its top speed, which is around 180 kmph.
According to Mercedes-Benz, the G580’s 116-kWh battery delivers over 450 km of range on a single charge. Moreover, charging via DC at up to 200 kW enables a 10-80% charge in just over 30 minutes.
Off-roading and Suspension
The electric G-Class employs torque vectoring for virtual differential locks, enhancing performance and handling on varied terrains.
The e-SUV configuration enables executing a “tank turn,” rotating its wheels in opposite directions for precise maneuvering. Mercedes refers to this feature as the G-Turn.
Additionally, G-Steering, similar to a scaled-back tank turn, maneuvers the vehicle into a 90-degree turn using the inside rear wheel. This feature helps on narrow trails, where obstacles like rocks or trees hinder conventional turning. Also, Mercedes has added a crawl function with three settings.
Even though it’s an EV, the G580’s suspension can handle off-road challenges with ease. The vehicle features an independent setup at the front and a solid axle at the rear. Furthermore, adjustable dampers are present at each corner of the car.
The EV shows remarkable capability on suitable surfaces, ascending slopes with a 100% grade (45º) and offering a fording depth of 33.5 inches.
With a ground clearance of 9.8 inches, the G580 ensures optimal off-road performance. Also, it boasts approach, departure, and breakover angles measuring 32, 30.7, and 20.3 degrees, respectively.
Latest and Advanced Features
In its 2025 update, Mercedes introduced off-road-oriented driver-assist features, benefiting both conventional and EV variants.
The stunning Offroad Cockpit offers essential off-road driving information displayed on the gauge cluster and infotainment screen.
Additionally, it displays vehicle positioning, compass, steering angle, tire pressure, and other relevant information for enhanced off-road driving.
The Transparent Hood feature uses surround-view cameras to show beneath the engine bay, beneficial for off-roading and navigating tricky curbs.
Wrapping Up
Mercedes-Benz will probably announce the price of the G580 with EQ Technology electric variant closer to its market launch. When launched, the G580 will rival the Rivian R1S and Hummer EV.
