Renault Espace Gets a Facelift, But is it Coming to India?

The Renault Espace has undergone a major redesign, incorporating a modernized design, advanced technology, and a full-hybrid powertrain. Originally introduced in 1984 as one of the first MPVs, the Espace has evolved into a premium SUV aimed at families and long-distance travellers. Renault has now refreshed its styling, introduced cutting-edge features, and improved efficiency to position the Espace as a competitive option in the D-segment.

A Modern Exterior with Dynamic Styling

Renault has updated the Espace’s design language, giving it a sharper and more contemporary look. The vehicle features a new radiator grille, revised front and rear light signatures, and a more sculpted body. More than one-third of the exterior has been redesigned, including the front fascia, bonnet, and tailgate. A new Baltic Blue Grey paint option has been introduced, alongside Midnight Blue, Pearl White, and Starry Black. The Esprit Alpine trim also gets a satin-finish Schist Grey option.

At the rear, the streamlined LED taillights integrate seamlessly into the tailgate, enhancing the vehicle’s width and stance. The lower portion of the Espace features black blades for additional protection, preventing gravel spray damage to the rear fenders.

The largest glass roof in Renault’s range, the Solarbay opacifying roof, adds to the Espace’s premium feel. Spanning nearly 2m², it can transition between transparent and opaque modes on demand, controlled via a roof switch or voice command.

Upgraded Interior and Passenger Comfort

Renault Espace Interiors

Renault has significantly improved interior comfort in the Espace. The new ergonomic front seats feature increased lumbar and lateral support, new upholstery options, and improved sound insulation. The dashboard has been redesigned with high-quality materials, with trims available in textile, Alcantara, and real wood (depending on the variant).

The Espace’s modular seating configuration allows it to accommodate five or seven passengers. The second-row bench slides 22 cm to adjust knee room, while the third-row seats fold flat into the floor when not in use. The boot capacity ranges from 520 to 2,224 litres, depending on the seat configuration.

A new driver recognition system personalizes the user experience by adjusting seat position, media preferences, and climate settings based on the driver’s profile. Renault has also included a hands-free power tailgate for added convenience.

Full Hybrid Powertrain for Efficiency

A full hybrid E-Tech 200 hp powertrain powers the Renault Espace, pairing a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine (130 hp, 205 Nm torque) with a 50 kW electric motor and a 2 kWh lithium-ion battery. The system uses a multi-mode automatic gearbox, ensuring optimal performance without a clutch.

The hybrid system provides four driving modes:

  • All-electric: Uses only the electric motor for short distances.
  • Dynamic hybrid: Combines both the petrol engine and electric motor for performance.
  • E-drive mode: The electric motor powers the wheels while the petrol engine charges the battery.
  • Conventional combustion mode: The petrol engine powers the wheels and/or recharges the battery.

With a fuel economy of 4.8 litres/100 km and CO₂ emissions of 108 g/km, the Espace offers a driving range of up to 1,100 km on a single tank.

Enhanced Driving Dynamics with 4Control Advanced

Renault Espace Side & Rear Profile

The Espace retains Renault’s 4Control Advanced four-wheel steering system, which improves agility and handling. At low speeds, the rear wheels turn up to 5 degrees in the opposite direction of the front wheels, reducing the turning circle to 10.4 metres—comparable to a compact hatchback. At higher speeds, the rear wheels turn slightly in the same direction as the front wheels for better stability.

The Multi-Sense driving modes allow customization of steering effort, throttle response, and chassis agility. The three MySense modes – Eco, Sport, and Comfort, control it.

Technology and Connectivity

The Renault Espace comes with the OpenR Link infotainment system, featuring a 24-inch digital display and a 9.3-inch head-up display. It comes with Google built-in, providing access to Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Play for app integration. Renault has also introduced driver fatigue detection software, which uses a camera in the A-pillar to detect drowsiness and recommend rest breaks.

Passengers benefit from multiple USB-C ports, an induction phone charger, and a premium Harman Kardon audio system. The rear seats also include touch-sensitive overhead lights and dedicated charging ports.

Comprehensive Safety and Driver Assistance

Renault has packed the Espace with 32 driver assistance systems (ADAS), including:

  • Active Driver Assist: Combines adaptive cruise control with lane centring.
  • Traffic Sign Recognition: Automatically adjusts speed based on road signs.
  • Active Emergency Braking System (AEBS): Detects vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Blind Spot Warning & Rear Cross Traffic Alert: Prevents collisions when changing lanes or reversing.
  • 360-degree 3D camera system: Enhances parking visibility.
  • Hill Start Assist & Trailer Stability Assist: Provides added control on inclines and while towing.

A My Safety Switch allows drivers to customize safety settings directly from the dashboard.

Three Trim Levels: Techno, Esprit Alpine, and Iconic

The Renault Espace is available in three trims:

  • Techno: Standard features include Adaptive LED headlights, 19-inch wheels, and OpenR infotainment.
  • Esprit Alpine: Adds 20-inch “Altitude” alloy wheels, black exterior elements, and Alcantara upholstery with blue stitching.
  • Iconic: Top-tier luxury trim featuring power-adjustable heated and massaging seats, real wood dashboard inlays, and an upgraded Harman Kardon audio system.

India Launch Still Uncertain

While Renault has confirmed that the new Espace will be available in multiple European markets before summer 2025, there is no official word on its launch in India. Given the growing interest in hybrid SUVs, Renault may consider introducing the Espace in India in the future, but for now, its availability remains unclear.

Final Thoughts

The Renault Espace continues to evolve, offering a blend of modern design, improved efficiency, and advanced technology. With its hybrid powertrain, spacious interior, and extensive safety features, the Espace positions itself as a strong contender in the premium family SUV segment. As it rolls out across Europe, it remains to be seen whether Renault will expand its availability to more global markets, including India.
