As an EV owner, you may, at times, have struggled to locate a reliable EV charging station near you. There is good news for you then. Google Maps is rolling out a new feature that will help electric vehicle (EV) drivers in India find charging stations near them.
So now, when you use Google Maps, you will see information about EV charging stations directly on the app. This includes details like the types of plugs each station supports and whether they are currently open. You can even check the real-time availability of charging points, which means you will know if a station has open spots before you arrive.
Google has teamed up with four EV charging providers in India—Ather, ElectricPe, Kazam, and Statiq—to gather and display this information. Together, they cover over 8,000 charging stations across the country. This is the first time that Google Maps is offering detailed information about EV charging stations for two-wheelers, not just cars.
In the U.S., Google Maps has already introduced similar updates. The app helps drivers find nearby chargers, shows real-time availability, and provides information on charging speeds.
Also, Google Maps used artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the experience in the United States. For example, the app will help you find chargers even in tricky locations like multilevel parking lots. Moreover, Google’s AI used user feedback, such as how successful a charging session was or what type of plug was used, to provide more accurate and helpful descriptions of each charging station.
Such information provides relief to EV drivers, and now Indian users will look to benefit from these improvements.
Meanwhile, the mapping industry in India is becoming more competitive. Recently, Ola Electric launched its own mapping service called Ola Maps to compete with Google Maps and MapmyIndia. However, Ola Maps is currently facing legal issues with MapmyIndia, which accuses Ola Electric of copying its data and technology.
Google Maps will look dominate the Indian mapping market by updating its features like locating EV charging stations. However, it will help find charging stations easier and more convenient, promoting the growth of electric vehicles in the country.
