The unveiling of the Bajaj Freedom 125 CNG motorcycle created excitement throughout the Indian two-wheeler market and online platforms. And now, it has increased the confidence of other two-wheeler manufacturers in India.
TVS, Bajaj’s rival, is planning to enter the CNG two-wheeler market with a scooter based on the TVS Jupiter 125. The Jupiter is widely embraced as a popular family scooter in India, ranking second in terms of sales nationwide. Moreover, it has a spacious storage area, the largest in its category. Its unique design, with the fuel tank under the footboard, distinguishes it from other scooters.
TVS Jupiter 125 CNG Scooter
According to a recent Autocar article, TVS is currently developing a CNG-powered Jupiter 125. When launched, it will be the world’s first scooter with a factory-installed CNG system. The report indicates that TVS has been actively working on alternative fuel technologies for years and has successfully engineered a CNG variant.
TVS Motor has initiated the project for the CNG scooter, codenamed U740. The aim is to finish development by late 2024 and make it ready by mid-2025. Moreover, the automaker has reportedly set a goal of selling around 1,000 units of CNG scooters per month.
Specifics about this CNG scooter remain undisclosed. TVS plans to provide potential customers with a range of choices, including petrol, electric, and CNG-powered scooters. The company is currently the third largest two-wheeler OEM, commanding an 18% market share. Also, it is the second-largest producer of scooters in India.
Just like the Freedom 125, the Jupiter 125 CNG will likely feature both a CNG tank and a traditional petrol tank. However, we have to wait to see how TVS integrates the CNG tank within the scooter’s chassis. Priced between Rs 95,000 and Rs 1.10 lakh (ex-showroom), the Freedom 125 offers a CNG efficiency of 102 km/kg with its 2kg CNG tank. And we believe TVS will price the Jupiter 125 around the same range.
