Spy Shots Show Renault’s Austral SUV Testing in India, Hybrid Plans Underway

Renault Austral old-style mild hybrid comes with 1.3l 4-cylinder petrol engine, 12V lithium-ion battery

Renault introduced the Austral, built on the third-gen CMF-C/D platform, worldwide in March 2022. In Europe, the vehicle comes in two versions: a standard version and a long-wheelbase version.

Recently, images taken by the media outlet showed the Austral SUV undergoing tests on Indian roads. Renault hasn’t confirmed if they will bring the Austral to India yet. However, the French automaker is considering using a hybrid powertrain in a future product for the Indian market. It’s likely that the Renault Duster will receive a hybrid powertrain. The expectation arises because the global version of the Duster offers two hybrid options: a 1.6-liter petrol-hybrid and a 1.2-liter petrol-hybrid.

Also, Renault will build the upcoming Duster in India on the smaller CMF-B platform, unlike the Austral. They will also use the same platform for a Nissan mid-size SUV based on the Duster.

What Spy Shots Reveal?

From the spy shots, it’s clear that the Renault Austral test car has wraparound LED tail lamps and a redesigned Renault logo placed above the Austral name. Although the front isn’t visible, the SUV may have a large grille, sharp LED headlights with distinctive DRLs shaped like boomerangs, and a sporty bumper.

Powertrain and Dimension

The global-spec Renault Austral offers three different powertrain options. These include:

  • E-Tech full hybrid setup, which combines a 1.2-liter turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor and high-voltage starter-alternator
  • Mild-hybrid advanced version with a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine, a 48V lithium-ion battery, and a starter motor
  • The older-style mild hybrid features a 1.3-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine, a 12V lithium-ion battery, and a starter motor

The Renault Austral replaces the Kadjar SUV in international markets. It measures 4,510mm in length, 1,830mm in width, and 1,620mm in height. That makes it a bit longer and taller than the Kadjar but slightly narrower. Moreover, the Austral has a wheelbase of 2,670mm.

Conclusion

The French automaker Renault is considering using a hybrid powertrain for the upcoming Duster bound for India. The company will create it on Renault’s larger CMF-C/D platform. On the other hand, the new Duster will use the smaller CMF-B platform.

Nissan, Renault’s partner, will also adopt the CMF-B platform for its own midsize SUV based on the Duster. Both Renault and Nissan will introduce seven-seater versions of these models as well.
