BMW has revealed the new 2025 BMW M5, which now has an electrified powertrain. This seventh-gen M5 is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), a significant change from previous versions that only had V8 engines. Also, the new M5 is larger and much more powerful than the old M5.
Production of the car will start in July, and it will be available for global sales by the end of this year.
Powertrain and Performance
The new M5 uses a powertrain similar to the one in the BMW XM. It has a 4.4-liter twin-turbo petrol V8 engine under the hood, which can rev up to 7,200 rpm.
The engine produces 577hp and 750 Nm of torque. Additionally, there is an electric motor that provides extra power. This motor alone generates up to 194hp and 280 Nm of torque. Together, the petrol engine and electric motor produce a total output of 717 hp and 1,000 Nm of torque.
The eight-speed M Steptronic automatic gearbox drives power to all four wheels. The car’s top speed is limited to 250 kmph, but with the optional M Driver’s package, it can reach up to 305 kmph.
It accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in 3.5 seconds, slightly slower than the previous-gen M5 CS that did it in 3 seconds. Also, it’s a bit slower than the regular previous-gen M5, which achieved the 0-100 kmph sprint in 3.4 seconds.
Design and Dimensions
In terms of design, the new M5 looks even more aggressive than the current 5 Series. The large kidney grille on the front is partly closed and has a shiny black finish with illuminated edges. BMW redesigned the front bumper to include larger air openings. Also, the automaker widened the front and rear tracks of the car.
On the side view, you can see the charging port flap on the left. Furthermore, the new M5 surpasses five meters in length for the first time in its line. It sits quite low with a ground clearance of only 115 mm.
The new M5 comes with 20-inch wheels in the front and 21-inch wheels in the rear as standard. At the rear, you’ll see a small lip spoiler on the trunk lid. BMW redesigned the rear bumper to include a diffuser and four tailpipes for the sports exhaust system.
Battery and Weight
The new M5’s battery has a capacity of 22.1 kWh (with 18.6 kWh usable). It allows for a 70 km range on the WLTP cycle, with a maximum electric speed of 140 kmph. It takes three hours and 15 minutes to charge the battery using a 7.4 kW AC charger.
Nevertheless, due to the plug-in hybrid setup, the new M5 now weighs 2,435 kg. This weight is more than 500 kg heavier than the previous M5. It’s also heavier than the all-electric i5 M60 xDrive.
Interior and Features
Inside, there is a new three-spoke steering wheel with dedicated ‘M’ buttons. The curved twin screens show custom BMW M graphics.
Standard features include:
- Four-zone automatic climate control
- Heated front seats
- Ambient lighting with M-specific interior lighting
- Panoramic glass roof
- Bowers & Wilkins audio system
- Automatic tailgate operation.
The new BMW M5 comes standard with adaptive M suspension that includes electronically controlled dampers. It features rear-wheel steering, which turns the rear wheels up to 1.5 degrees in the same direction as the front wheels at high speeds to improve agility. Buyers can opt for M carbon-ceramic brakes for the M5.
The new M5 includes ADAS for safety, with optional features such as:
- Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability
- Steering and lane control assistant
- Traffic light detection
- Automatic speed limit assistance
India Launch Details
The new M5 starts at £110,500 (Rs 1.17 crore) in the UK, and deliveries will begin later this year. Currently, there is no direct competition for the M5 because Mercedes-Benz has not yet revealed the new-gen AMG E 63 sedan.
Although there is no official confirmation of its launch in India, it will happen next year. Currently, BMW’s primary focus in India is launching the standard 5 Series, which will be available for sale next month.
