MG Comet EV or Tata Tiago EV: Save Rs 40-50k on Your Electric Car Purchase

While MG Comet EV is more affordable (Rs 6.74 lakh), Tata Tiago (Rs 7.99 Lakh) offers more range (20-40km)

Are you switching to an electric vehicle (EV) and considering the most economical option? Well, you have two good choices with MG Comet EV and Tata Tiago EV.

It’s worth noting that, in July, the Comet EV cost Rs 40-50k less than before. It brings Comet’s ex-showroom price down to Rs 6.74 lakh. Meanwhile, the Tiago EV comes with a price tag of Rs 7.99 lakh before discounts.

Despite their distinct differences, both cars are direct competitors as they are among India’s most affordable electric vehicles. So, which one should you pick? Let’s find out.

MG Comet EV comes at a lower price point compared to the Tata Tiago EV.

Reasons to Prefer MG Comet EV

  • Affordability

As mentioned earlier, the Comet EV comes at a lower price point compared to the Tata Tiago EV. A price difference of more than Rs 40-50k is substantial for a car priced below Rs 7 lakh. Therefore, customers may find it hard to ignore such an opportunity. So, if you have a tight budget, MG Comet EV can be the right choice.
  • Compact design

The MG Comet EV’s design is excellent for urban settings and daily commutes. The Comet has dimensions of 2,974mm x 1,505mm x 1,640mm (LxWxH). Meanwhile, the Tiago EV measures 3,769 mm x 1,677 mm x 1,536 (LxWxH).

Its compact size allows for effortless navigation through narrow city streets and parking areas. This standout feature of the Comet proves highly beneficial in everyday situations.

  • Stylish Interior

The interior of the Comet has a futuristic, simple, and appealing design. It features a 10.25-inch dual-screen arrangement — one for the instrument panel and another for entertainment — creating an upmarket feel.

Additionally, the use of a white color scheme and extensive glass area enhances its feeling of openness. In contrast, the Tiago EV’s cabin appears outdated compared to the MG, especially with its small digital speedometer and 7-inch touchscreen.

Reasons to Prefer Tata Tiago EV

  • Performance

The Tata Tiago EV offers two driving modes: City mode limits max torque to 75 percent, while Sport mode unleashes the motor’s full potential.

Interestingly, in City mode, the Tiago EV accelerates from 0-60kph just as quickly as the Comet does in Sport mode. However, the Tiago EV pulls ahead significantly, taking over 6 seconds less than the Comet to reach 100kph.

Additionally, the Tiago’s 74hp motor is more responsive compared to the Comet’s 41hp motor. Also, the Tiago achieves a higher top speed of 120kph, whereas the Comet EV’s top speed is 101kph.
  • Range and Charging

The MG Comet EV’s 17.3kWh battery provides a range of 230 km on a full charge. Meanwhile, the Tata Tiago EV’s 24kWh battery offers a range between 250 and 315 km. However, actual range and efficiency figures may differ based on driving habits and weather conditions.

You can charge the Comet’s top-spec variants at a rate of 7.4W compared to the base model with 3.3W. The top model’s battery requires 3.5 hours for a complete charge and 2.5 hours to reach 10-80 percent charge on an AC fast charger.

In contrast, the Tata Tiago EV is more convenient due to its support for DC fast charging. With a fast charger, its battery can charge from 10-80 percent in just one hour, making it particularly suitable for long-distance journeys.

  • Practicality

The Tiago EV’s most significant advantage is its ability to accommodate five passengers. Unlike the Comet, which accommodates only two passengers, Tiago allows three people to sit comfortably in the rear.

The Tiago EV’s interior is notably more functional, featuring storage compartments. Its 240-litre boot space is significantly more spacious as well. Conversely, the Comet EV offers limited storage options and has a small boot, which diminishes its practicality.

Each of these cars presents unique benefits over the other. Therefore, opting for the MG Comet EV is an obvious choice if you have a tight budget. It’s the most affordable electric car available in the mass market in India.

However, the Tiago EV is a better option if you prioritize a vehicle with practicality and performance. Regardless, you can evaluate both EVs based on the criteria mentioned above and decide according to your needs.
